Microsoft Word for (Romance) Writers
Dates: July 3 - 14, 2006
Instructor: Catherine Chant
Course description:
We all know Microsoft Word can type text, help us get that
book of our hearts onto the page, but we also know that for
its $200+ price tag this program must be able to do other
things to help make our writing lives easier--if only we understood
how to use it without having to read a five-pound manual or
pages and pages of online Help screens. Who has time for all
that? We want to be writing. :-)
"Microsoft Word for (Romance) Writers" will focus
on teaching you the aspects of the Word program that are most
useful for fiction writers, and the subjects presented will
help you streamline your on-screen tasks so you can think
more about your story and less about what the computer is
doing (or not doing).
Included in this workshop will be lectures on proper manuscript
formatting, creating headers/footers, working with page numbers,
creating a pre-formatted manuscript template that can be used
on all your new book projects, customizing the toolbars to
meet your needs, understanding/customizing the Auto-Correct
feature, using the Work menu, and using Word macros to help
with revision. Other subjects that will be covered if there
is time: formatting the query letter, creating a template
for the query, printing envelopes, printing labels for SASEs,
and backing up your computer files.
Although this workshop isn't intended to be a computer troubleshooting
clinic, Catherine will do her best to try to answer any questions
participants have about weird and unexplained MSWord things
happening on their computers as time allows.
About the Instructor:
Catherine Chant is an award-winning writer from the Boston
area. She writes non-fiction as well as fiction, but primarily
focuses on young adult fiction and romantic suspense. Prior
to becoming a full-time writer, Catherine worked for fifteen
years at her alma mater, Boston College, as a Senior Computing
& Communications Consultant. In this role, she routinely
helped staff and students with computer questions, particularly
in the areas of word processing and electronic communications.
She also trained university staff in the use of Microsoft
products for several years and wrote documentation and help
sheets for the university population. Catherine has put her
knowledge of the Microsoft Word product into use in her writing
career, developing templates, macros and other short cuts
that help streamline her writing process to give her more
time for the actual writing and less time worrying about the
technology.
Catherine is a PRO member of the Romance Writers of America
(RWA) and an active member of the From the Heart Romance Writers
(FTHRW) chapter, the National Association of Women Writers
(NAWW) and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators
(SCBWI). She is currently working on a young adult contemporary
romance.
