I don’t think it is trite if you have the heroine try everything under the sun to save herself and she is at the end of her rope. (see what I did there? I love clichés) What makes it not trite is that the hero doesn’t save her but makes her realize she has the strength or brains or ability to save herself. He is like Glinda in Wizard of Oz. “You always had the ability to go home.”
When I started writing seriously for publication I thought the romance world still did damsels in distress and white knights on fiery steeds. LOL
