Jessie wrinkled her nose and planted her hands on her slim hips. “But that was in the olden days. This is now.”
This is such a vivid line. We get an instant clear picture of the little girl, her attitude, what she’s thinking. Well done. The mother’s continual replies of how everything will be all right–even though she’s far from sure that’s true–pull at our heartstrings as well.
It’s interesting to note that you could open the book with this scene and we’d be thrust right into the premise with all we need to know to dive into the story.
