She smiles with her mouth but her eyes are cold. It is as if she is estimating the weight of a chicken before buying.
We can certainly know who we’re dealing with given a statement like that. It seems like every family has one of those aunts. You bring up an interesting option–a telling comment like this doesn’t have to be classic dialogue, but can be accomplished in internal dialogue as well. Of course, Abigail’s external dialogue backs it up as well so we as readers are set up to easily believe the narrator’s comment. Good job!
