I tend to either not show enough emotion or used “crutch” words (the old 9verly-used words) like “smiled,” “nodded,” and “gasped.”

Hi Jeanne,
We all use those crutch words in our first drafts. I strongly suggest that you get The Emotion Thesaurus, if you don’t already have it. I couldn’t live without it. Note to all: If you have an old copy of the Emotion Thesaurus, a new edition came out in 2019 which is much expanded and well worth the purchase.
