I was thinking about “Silence” and I’m not sure if I know what you mean. Does this refer to a physical action rather than a spoken answer, such as “he shrugged”?
Exactly. Characters do not have to say something in response to a question or statement that affects them emotionally. They can look away, fiddle with something, stare out the window, etc. This can then cause a similar response in the other speaker, breaking up lines of dialogue.
