Zara, thanks for the grammar explanation. I really struggled with a short backstory, but using “had” once at the beginning would make it much clearer!

It is amazing how one little word change can make such a difference. But using had in the first sentence of backstory is a writing convention, and readers see it as a cue – backstory coming.
