My least favorite rules:
- You have to use perfect grammar when writing dialogue.
- Never use a semicolon. (I love JSB, but that’s one of his.)
- Never use adverbs.
- Never use exclamation marks.
- Never end a sentence with a preposition.
- Never use alliteration.
The one I feel the most attached to is the perfect grammar one, but I’m starting to let go of it. Story trumps grammar every time. I’m about writing a good story, not impressing anyone with my knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style.
