My favorite dialogue comes from Joss Whedon shows. JW the person is problematic, but his writing on Buffy and Firefly was so good. I just try to focus on the actors who pulled off the great lines.
Writing dialogue is something I’m comfortable with overall, but I have noticed a tendency to use exposition when a well-placed question would do the trick.
A quick example would be: Jane escorted John into a room that was unfamiliar to him. She’d brought him here for reasons he didn’t fully comprehend. vs “Where the heck are we, Jane?” John demanded. “What’s going on?”
You get the idea 😉
Today, I’m going to search out an opportunity to use dialogue in place of lengthy exposition in my work.
