I’ve dropped my writing project for now. Once again I volunteered to serve as a judge in Writer’s Digest’s Self-Published Books competition and have to read 50 books between now and the end of August. I like to judge because I get to see what other people are doing, and I can tell you that 50% of the books I judge are bad (poorly written, riddled with typos, etc.), 30% are decent (could have been much improved with a strong editor); 15% are pretty good (well written, proofread, etc.) and then 5% are really outstanding (the kind that make you wonder why it didn’t get traditionally published).
