The actions of your son are the ones that I found most affecting. In a romance, they would separate as he went off to college and then later they would meet and marry.  Though I couldn’t stand Love Story and won’t read another love story where the woman dies,  many love those stories and they certainly stir emotions.
I didn’t think your account cold-hearted. You observed as a compassionate reporter. The picture was clear,
 A pediatric hospital is a place that can tear one’s emotions to shreds. My daughter was in one at Christmas when she was eight months old.  Seeing all the small children – none was even ten– could destroy one if one became too emotional.  Self-preservation alone means one can not give in to emotions. Like nurses and doctors there, one has to hold to a bit of emotional distance.
