Hi, Cheryl and everyone,
Hope you had a good week. I really had to make myself sit down and write even though there were times I didn’t feel like it. I finished editing 5 of the 6 stories I’m going to publish in a collection (I think – might publish them separately) and now I’m on story number 6. I really loved story number 5 and was able to put in additions that deepened the story and the relationships of the characters to each other. I like story 6 well enough, but I became so attached to story 5 that 6 seems like kind of a let down.
After I’m done with this edit, I’ll have to go back over all six to address the comments that I made for each story, then go over them for overly-used words (they breathe a lot – taking deep breaths and forcing themselves to breathe in reaction to things). I’ll really have to use my Emotional Thesaurus to help me write what I want to convey without relying on the same over used words over and over. Then I’ll spell check and proof read. These stories might be ready in late spring or early summer!
One thing I notice is that my writing is getting better in regard to adding how the characters feel and how they’re reacting toward things that happen.
I’m reading The Frugal Book Promoter in an effort to acquire marketing skills. Marketing is my weakest area because I don’t know how to do this. So far, the book is helpful. The author’s name is Carolyn Howard-Johnson. Of course, her name makes me think of Howard Johnson hotels and motels.
On the non-writing front, this past week, I took care of the paperwork for my deferred compensation (401k) and the required minimum disbursement triggered beginning this year. I’ll be 72 in October (how depressing). If you have a 401k, you have to take the disbursements by age 72. While I’m glad I put this money aside very month while I was working, I ended up being depressed at having to face that I’m heading toward the end of my life, that I have more years behind me than ahead of me. But that’s life.
Have a good week everyone!
