Thanks for your comments and ideas. I’ve developed a few road blocks for this couple – she is torn between getting back to the academic life or being the model corporate wife. Plus, there’s the question of kids – he’s got two, he’s done with that. She’s young and doesn’t want to reject the possibility. And one of his teenage daughters hates her. The corporate wives are also cruel. She’s young, hasn’t got their social graces and has snared herself one of their circle, and they see her as an interloper, gold digger. I’m trying to use the angle that the differences between them that they find intriguing in each other are also the source of tensions that might be difficult to overcome.
I’m glad you raised the issue of conflict – it’s probably the thing that has challenged me most so far in my writing. I tend to rework to get the characters into conflict (inner/with each other’s goals) but then rescue them from it too soon!
