I have an old computer with an older version of Word. Using the “whole word only” function in the search takes an extra step, so it’s faster and easier for me to do the space, word, space in the search.
I, too, was shocked at how many times I’d repeated words, especially “that.” I agree – going through our manuscripts for over-used words is part of the editing process. From now on, I intend to be aware of using “that” when I’m writing my first draft – and other words too. Like breath, smiled, nodded, gasped, eyes widened, gulped. And more.
