From The Heart Member Forums Tutorial
Welcome to the FTH Member Forums!
To access our new forums the first step is to LOGIN:
Go to the Members Only Menu Tab Above
When the drop down menu appears you will see the Member Log-In Option.
When you click it you will see the Members Login page.
Note: If you chose to actively log out later, this page is your LOGOUT page as well after you log in. Once you log in, the Forgot Password prompt becomes a Log Out prompt.
Once you log in you may access the FTH Member forums from the Members Only menu, the Workshops forums from the Workshops menu, or any other forum you are a member of. If you can not find the Workshops forums, please reference the Workshops forum tutorial under the workshops menu.
The Second Step is to Subscribe to Your Forum
This is the only tricky part to the new forums:
Once in the forum, click the large red button at the top to subscribe to receive forum topics/lessons in your email. If you do not click this button, topic posts will not be sent to you. This will not get you follow on comments and replies.
When you open a topic/post to read it (in the forum), if you wish to receive follow on comments and replies on that topic/post you will need to subscribe to the individual topics inside the lesson itself (pictured above, you need to open the post you want and look for a subscribe link in the top right corner) for every lesson/topic you want to follow. You do not have the option to do this in an email, it must be done in the forum, here on the site.
This is a function of the forums software we can not change. It is designed to allow forum users to only track threads they wish to follow.
Once you log in, you will be able to access any forums you are a member of. Workshop forums are open to all members so you can log in here to see those as well. However, if the forum says “Private” when you click on it, you have to join it specifically. Ex: Stormplotters, Productivity
I don’t want to subscribe to every forum and then go subscribe to the individual threads I care about. Why don’t you just opt me in to everything like Yahoo did?
On our site, the daily forum is just one forum our members (you) have access to. In all, we have nearly twenty different active forums at any given time. The number of messages each member would get, if we opted everyone into everything they CAN access, instead of having member driven forwarding (you subscribe to what you want), would mean members would receive anywhere from a dozen to over a hundred messages every single day. Yes, there is that much going on with our chapter any given day 🙂
The topics having to be followed individually is a SPAM reduction measure inherent to the forum software because many online organizations face the same challenge, to get members what they want without drowning them in things they don’t. Unfortunately, we can’t make that determination for you since it is based on the each member’s personal preferences.
Finally, Log Out if You Wish
You may log out of the forums at any time by returning to the Member Login page and selecting Logout underneath the Login boxes.
Are there any no-no’s? Only One!
Reply to topics, don’t create new ones.
For Email, simply reply to the messages you receive if you like, you don’t have the option to create a topic in via email.
When in the Forum (on the actual website), open the topic/message, scroll to the bottom of the message, and reply or comment. Perfect!
If you go into the forum and scroll down WITHOUT OPENING THE MESSAGE YOU ARE COMMENTING ON OR REPLYING TO, and use the box below the topic list to comment or reply (it’s tempting because the box to create a new topic is right there and looks a lot like the reply/comment box in the message), it will create a whole new topic. In doing so, you are not replying or commenting on a particular topic/lesson and your message won’t have any context. Hence, the post will be deleted or moved to the appropriate topic/lesson, if the moderator can tell where it was meant to go.
However, if you do it on accident it is not a big deal, just email us at email@example.com and tell us which forum and topic, and tell us where you meant it to go, and we will happily move it for you.
I am only getting the main topic messages and no replies or comments.
When you open a message to read it in your email, you can’t subscribe to get the follow on comments/replies from the email. You have to come here to the actual forum, view the message there, and from the OPEN message subscribe (upper right corner) to get any follow on replies. You only need do this once per topic, not for every single reply to that topic. This will not work if you are looking at the messages in your email, only when you are in the actual forum here on the website.
I only see a few forums.
Workshops are up and going so you should be able to see the current workshop and the next few coming up. Previous workshops are under their own section on the workshops menu.
We are currently adding one FTH member forum every few weeks. There will be announcements as each forum is stood up.
Forums associated with the contest will be active for next year’s contest cycle.
It says PRIVATE and won’t let me in.
For workshop forums, as a member, you should be able to access all the workshop forums, previous, current, and upcoming. Just look for them under the Workshops menu.
As a member, if you try to enter a forum and it says Private, that just means you need to actively join the forum if you are interested in it. Each closed member forum has a join instructions and a contact listed on the members only page.
Why are there private forums? Storm plotter and the Productivity Forum are private for example, only members active in those forums need access to the content. Another example, is the Judges forum that is set up for the Pages From the Heart Judges to receive updates and guidance from the contest administrators. If you’re not judging the contest each Summer, you probably don’t want all those updates 🙂
If you are a member of a private group and can’t get in, it’s only a minor permissions adjustment and won’t take long to fix. For these fixes, please don’t hesitate to contact Merien at firstname.lastname@example.org
Lots more information will be coming out about the forums over the next few months. There will be video tours available and all sorts of things, so please stay tuned and be patient.
We understand it is new and there will be growing pains. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
We thank you all for your willingness to learn a new process as we improve and grow.
